Conservation planning for people and nature in a Chilean biodiversity hotspot

چکیده

The Mediterranean-type climate region of Chile is a globally unique biodiversity hotspot but its protected area system does not adequately represent the biological diversity, nor it provide equitable access to people. We explored options expand cost-effectively improve conservation forest ecosystem types while simultaneously enhancing social accessibility areas. Social defined as municipalities cultural services provided by areas which depends on distance highly demanded and income municipalities. Using systematic planning methods, we identified priority for extending existing that: (a) minimise land acquisition cost, (b) maximise (c) optimise both cost accessibility. results show that possible minimising cost. Considering alone, could be expanded 86% at $47 million USD, would also increase 12%. Accessibility can increased further 18% jointly considering without compromising or performance. New private policy developed in help offset costs through novel public–private partnerships. Our specific guidance policymakers strategically identify new locations conservation, same time reducing inequality consideration reserve design success tool bringing people closer nature. Biodiversity conservation in local planning.

Local land-use policy is increasingly being recognized as fundamental to biodiversity conservation in the United States. Many planners and conservation scientists have called for broader use of planning and regulatory tools to support the conservation of biodiversity at local scales. Yet little is known about the pervasiveness of these practices. We conducted an on-line survey of county, munici...

Special Section: Balancing Conservation and Development to Preserve China’s Biodiversity Seed plant phylogenetic diversity and species richness in conservation planning within a global biodiversity hotspot in eastern Asia

One of the main goals of conservation biology is to understand the factors shaping variation in biodiversity across the planet. This understanding is critical for conservation planners to be able to develop effective conservation strategies. Although many studies have focused on species richness and the protection of rare and endemic species, less attention has been paid to the protection of th...

Planning for Biodiversity Conservation Using Stochastic Programming

Rapid species extinctions and the loss of other biodiversity features worldwide have prompted the development of a systematic planning framework for the conservation of biodiversity. Limited resources (∼ 40 million USD annually) are available for conservation, particularly in the developing countries that contain many of the world’s hotspots of species diversity. Thus, conservation planning pro...
